£10,000 events fund open to applicants

A £10,000 FUND to help pay for community events in Newark has been set up by the town council.
The money is available to community groups, charities and businesses who want to stage a music, cultural, community or sporting event this year.
The council leader, Mrs Gill Dawn, said it had been decided to set up the grant when the council discussed the 2014 Newark Festival.
She said it was decided to set aside a pot of money to encourage people to organise events for the public as well as the festival.
“We would love people to come forward with their ideas and tell us what they would like to do,” she said.
“It could be that the violin school or a choir would like to put something on.”
She hoped that in future there may be enough people who wanted to be involved in staging a full-scale community festival.
Priority will be given to events taking place until August 31.
The grants will meet up to half the cost of an event with a maximum of £1,000 available, although requests exceeding that may be considered if the budget allows.
Applicants must either be based in the town boundary or the event must take place largely within it.
The money will be available only to events that are open to the public.
Preference will be given to those that are free.
If there is an over subscription for the money then applications will be considered on a first-come first-served basis.
Application forms are available from the Town Hall and will be considered by the council’s finance and policy committee.
Newark Festival, featuring the Human League and Union J, is on the weekend of June 20 to 22.
