A charity fundraiser trekking to Everest Base Camp, Nepal, next month is holding a Mother’s Day-themed market stall tombola in Newark on Saturday.
Kathryn Mays, of Newark, is paying for the trek and money raised will go directly to help Newark Women’s Aid.
She set a target of £5,000, which was reached at Christ-mas, and now wants to collect about £6,000 and raise awareness of the charity’s work.
Kathryn said she decided to help the charity because it helped her to rebuild her life.
She said that one in four women in the UK endured domestic abuse in their lifetime and by helping the cause she was ensuring they had somewhere safe to go.
Training for the 17-day high-altitude trek included taking part in a climbing wall, rope bridge and zip-wire exercise to prepare for the bridges Kathryn will have to cross at Everest.
She said she had been supported by her partner and children.
Details about the trek are at kathrynmays.tcnwk.com
Newark Women’s Aid is looking for people to sponsor a room in the refuge. It costs £30 to keep a family safe for a night.
Laurens Patisseries Ltd, Newark, has made the cause its charity of the year.
