Collingham rally driver impresses the testers

A promising rally driver narrowly missed out on a spot in the 2017 Junior World Rally Championships after a two-day testing programme.
George Lepley, 19, of Collingham, competed with seven rally drivers from across the world at Ford Motorsport Headquarters Msport in Cumbria.

The testing event was open to drivers under 26 and offered the eventual winner a funded drive from Msport and Dmack tyres in next year’s championships.

Many of the drivers had already competed in the World Rally Championship and European rallies.

Lepley finished second in a series of fitness tests, and also completed a driving assessment with World Rally Championship driver Elfyn Evans.

The driving spot was eventually given to French driver Nicholas Ciamin.

Lepley was given cause for optimism after being kept behind at the end of the session.

Lepley said: “The judging panel explained to me that I was their choice of driver for the win but felt I hadn’t got enough experience at international level to benefit from the prize in 2017.

“They advised me to go away to gain experience and come back again next year.”
