Southwell Rugby Club captain George Machin believes their second clash with Newark this season will be more of a scrap as the two rivals push for second place in Midlands Division Two East (North).
Southwell came out on top in their league encounter earlier in the season, winning 50-20 at Kelham Road — Newark’s only home defeat of the season.

Machin predicted a different kind of match to the free-flowing rugby on show then.

“I would fully expect them to be pointing at this match and wanting to pay us back,” he said.

“The weather in the previous match was good and allowed us to pass the ball through the backs and score plenty of tries.

“This time around I am expecting it to be mushier underfoot and for a more physical game.

“Both teams need to win to get our seasons back on track.

“I expect Melbourne to win the league, which means there are a lot of teams chasing second place for a play-off spot.”

Before the match, more than 300 guests will listen to a talk by Nottingham Rugby Club head coach Ian Costello.

Fundraising will take place for road safety charity Brake in memory of a friend of the club, Dominique Wright, who died in a road accident last year.

Money will also be raised for the continued development of facilities at Park Lane.

Saturday’s match starts at 3pm.
