Why not spend your next festive holiday getting to know the different cities in the UK? The ‘staycation’ is becoming an increasingly popular choice among families that could see you saving some pennies on your next trip – perfect for those last minute Christmas presents. Flights from the
East Midlands airport
are all available at particularly low prices this season.
Plus, staying closer to home gives you the chance to spend some quality time in new and exciting surroundings with your family without the hassle or expense of a long haul flight. And you won’t be alone in choosing to stay closer to home, as popular tourist website VisitBritain predicts that there will be a three per cent rise in UK tourism in the coming year.
The country’s cities are already glittering with bright lights, trees, markets and festive cheer, ready for shoppers to spend their hard earned cash in anticipation of Christmas day. But, like for like retailer sales are disappointingly down 0.4 per cent so far this year on 2011, according to analysis of sales by the British Retail Consortium. Many analysts, they noted, expected a better result, with an expected growth of 0.9 per cent. They also commented that people are spending more money on lower priced gifts, with a higher emphasis on good value due to cautious spending. There was, however, a notable increase in money spent on pets and warm clothing, so at least not everyone is missing out.
In spite of lower than expected sales, the UK is enjoying the first signs of economic recovery following the huge success of the 2012 Olympics and Jubilee celebrations. So spending your precious pounds within the UK rather than travelling abroad this winter is a great way to support the economy and have some fun while doing so.
VisitBritain chairman Christopher Rodrigues commented: “This country’s tourism offer is about much more than growth in visitor numbers. Tourism offers not just jobs but careers for life. It employs young people who are now in training to become Ambassadors for Britain, welcoming visitors to their hotels, attractions and shops – taking on the mantle of the Games Makers.”
Travel agents are strongly advising customers to book early to avoid disappointment. Millions of Brits are planning to travel to pastures new this winter and prices for hotels and attractions are rising every day. So if you’re feeling a little more patriotic than usual, now is the perfect time to find yourself a cosy UK hotel. Whether you choose to stay in a cosy log cabin in Dundee or a stylish apartment in Newcastle, there is bound to be something to suit everyone. The interest of UK consumers has been with great value deals, so get in early and bag yourself just that.
