100 boxes of aid given in two days as Newark Freemasons step up for Ukrainians
Newark Freemasons have contributed to the humanitarian aid programme for Ukrainian refugees with a massive collection of items to be sent direct to Poland.
The appeal for contributions took place over the two days at the weekend.
The result was more than 100 boxes and bags of items, such as bedding, adult and children’s clothing, toiletries, toys and other items.
These were packed ready for collection on on Monday by West Kent Freemasons and taken by convoy to Poland. The aid was scheduled to arrive on Tuesday.
Newark Masonic Hall chairman Jim Crossley said it was hoped these will not be the only donations provided to help those having escaped the carnage into neighbouring countries or those still in Ukraine, should humanitarian aid corridors be established.
He said Newark Freemasons had a long history of charitable giving and this appeal had to be the most urgent they had been asked to respond to.
Mr Crossley said he was proud of the response they had, not only from members of Newark lodges but also from other lodges in Nottinghamshire and friends who felt the need to help.
