Nottinghamshire residents who have been misled by a scam involving doorstep traders selling fish are being encouraged to report their experience to the county council’s Trading Standards team.

The team has received more reports from local buyers who have been led to believe they were buying a couple of portions of premium cod or haddock and were charged much more for what is likely to be frozen cheap white fish.

Although there have been few reports, the council believes this problem is more widespread and needs more information on the problem to help tackle it.

Residents are also being encouraged to make vulnerable friends and relatives aware of the scam and not to buy from anyone on their doorstep.

Councillor Gordon Wheeler, vice-chairman of council’s community safety committee, said: “The fish scam is a growing national problem and we are keen for local people to spread the word about this fishy practice.

“The bottom line is never buy from a doorstep trader and if you are approached report the incident so we can build up a better picture and tackle these sellers.”

Residents with more information on this problem should contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 04 05 06.
