£50m Asda-led development underway

The £50m redevelopment of Newark's Potterdyke site, including a new Asda store, is underway.

Work started at the former carpark off Lombard Street on Monday.

The Robin Hood Hotel carpark was closed off from Saturday morning in anticipation of the work beginning.

To help alleviate the shortage of town centre carparking spaces during the scheme, a 50-space temporary carpark will be provided at the rear of the Potterdyke site, off Pelham Street.

This will open once the early part of the building scheme has been completed, which is hoped to be by Christmas.

The wider scheme, which includes a new bus station, doctors’ surgery, health centre, retail units, housing and 411 car parking spaces, began in the spring.

The new Asda store is set to open by Christmas 2011, with the new bus station opening at the same time.
