A £5m data centre was officially opened this afternoon by the MP for Newark, Mr Patrick Mercer.

Timico, a Newark-based internet and communications provider, has built the new centre behind its existing offices at Beacon Hill Office Park.

It provides two 2,000sq ft data halls where customers can securely store vast amounts of virtual data, including websites, databases and email servers.

The facility has the capacity to store a high-resolution photograph of every person on the planet.

Timico's chairman, Mr Tim Radford, said they had purchased a three acre site opposite the building in order to further expand their operations.

Two further data halls, a state-of-the-art warehouse and a customer management centre are planned.

"Our vision is to become the number one independent provider of internet services and communications to the business market," he said.

Timico Group now employs 200 people and is expected to record a revenue approaching £50m this year, with that figure due to more than double by 2016.

Mr Radford said they were extremely proud to be based in Newark.

Mr Mercer, who officially opened the centre using an iPad, said the centre marked the dawning of a new era for Newark and a significant change in the town's business structure.
