Campaigners in Whatton are stepping up their campaign to fix Old Grantham Road properly once and for all.

Villagers claim that the road – in the pretty rural location is letting the village down, damaging cars and is a danger to drivers and pedestrians.

They have enlisted the help of Bingham East councillor Francis Purdue-Horan, who has prioritised getting the road fixed.

They have launched a petition to force Nottinghamshire County Council’s hand and questioned just how much the council have wasted with their ‘botched jobs.’

Resident Suzy Sagoo, a former Whatton-in-the-Vale parish councillor, is demanding action.

She said: “The fact that Nottinghamshire County Council have been out a staggering 64 times in just seven years to visit and repair the road is shocking.

“Just how much money have they wasted by not fixing it properly first time?

“Residents in our village are up in arms and we hope that the petition forces action.

“Local residents will be with me knocking on doors with a petition to demand action before more money is wasted.

“Residents feel that rural communities like ours, get ignored by this county council.

“We will work together as a community to send a clear message to council bosses that enough is enough.”

Campaigners have launched an online petition demanding action and will be calling door to door in the village and the neighbouring village of Aslockton to get residents to sign up.

For a number of years, Francis Purdue-Horan, an Independent Alliance councillor has placed Old Grantham Road in his top three priorities for road resurfacing.

He has continually pushed highway’s bosses to fix the broken road.

Francis said: “The amount of money that the county council have spent with temporary road repairs on roads like Old Grantham Road is ridiculous.

“The road and others in Bingham East are in a terrible state of disrepair.

“For the county council’s emergency repair teams to have visited the road 64 times in just seven years beggars belief.

“Common sense should have told them to resurface the road to save time and money.

“Just imagine how much they would have saved if they had fixed it properly first time.

“This attractive tree lined road is very sadly potentially dangerous to cars, is letting the village down and I hope the resident’s petition persuades the county council to do the right thing.”
