A helping hand for safe crossing
An appeal has been made for wildlife enthusiasts to be vigilant for toads crossing roads in their area.
Toad crossing patrols are taking place on Blind Lane, Oxton, which the creatures cross every spring to get to breeding grounds from winter hibernation sites.
Mrs Margaret Cooper, of Main Street, Oxton, organises the patrols — where volunteers pick up the toads and carry them safely to the opposite side of the road.
She said volunteers often came from other areas to help in Oxton but it was quite likely that toad migration routes crossed roads in their area.
"The message to people is look around you because wherever you are, you will probably find there are some toad crossings,” she said.
Anyone wanting to set up a crossing patrol should contact the Wildlife Trust.
