Newark Advertiser archives: Look back at action of Willie Hall Trophy with this season's final set for Sunday
As the Newark Alliance prepares for the final of the Willie Hall Trophy this weekend, the Advertiser has delved into its archives to look back at some of the action and previous cup winners.
The curtain comes down on the Newark Alliance football season on Sunday when the final is played on Sunday.
This season's trophy will be contested between Walesby and White Hart at Collingham FC.
The trophy is the premier silverware for Alliance teams and its final closes the season every May.
It is named after Newark footballing hero Willie Hall, who died 55 years ago on Saturday, May 21.
He signed for Notts County while working for Ransome and Marles, and two years later moved to Tottenham Hotspur for £2,500, where he spent the rest of his career.
He won ten England caps but his most memorable appearance was against Northern Ireland on November 16, 1938, when he scored five goals in a 30-minute period either side of half time. It included three in just 3½ minutes — a record that still stands today.
His career was cut short in 1944 by thrombosis, which eventually led to both his lower legs being amputated.
The Willie Hall Trophy has been contested annually in his memory for more than 50 years.
