Emma Dolan is the new Commonwealth super-flyweight champion after defeating Halima Vunhabei for the vacant belt
In front of a packed house at the Lady Eastwood Pavillion on the card of Carl Greaves' 150th boxing show, Emma Dolan won the headline fight and was crowned the new super-flyweight Commonwealth champion.
Her opponent was tough Tanzanian Halima Vunjabei who is a former two-time world title challenger.
Dolan was awarded the decision after outboxing her opponent, using her height and reach advantage to full effect in what was a great bout.
The three judges scored the fight 97-94, 97-93 and 98-92.
Originally from Norwich Dolan now lives in Newark where she trains under Carl Greaves and Adam Kettleborough at Carl Greaves' boxing gym.
The win extends her undefeated record to 5-0.
There is no doubt that the Newark community has adopted her as a vocal crowd got behind Dolan in her battle with Vunjabei.
"The support I had was unreal I knew I did okay on tickets to people from Norwich but everyone in that arena got behind me as I walked to the ring and it was fantastic," said Dolan.
"Newark has opened its arms to me and brought me in as one of their own.
"I’m forever grateful."
Former women Commonwealth champions Nina Bradley and Stacey Copeland were in attendance to watch the battle as Vunjabei landed a lovely shot in round two before Dolan started bombarding the Tanzanian with shots of her own.
"She was a tough girl," said Dolan about her opponent.
"She is the toughest girl I’ve faced so far."
"After nearly a year out of the ring and going straight into a title fight against someone who challenged for the world title twice, I’m fairly happy with my performance."
"It was a big step up for Emma," said her trainer Carl Greaves.
"She went from six two-minute rounds over four fights straight into a ten-round tough challenge against a good, lively opponent.
"It was a high-risk fight for Emma with a lot to gain and it all paid off because she is now the Commonwealth champion."
