Future First Expo to take place at Newark Showground in November

A free event showcasing the many options available to young people in terms of careers, training, and education returns to Newark Showground next week.

The Future First Expo takes place at the Lady Eastwood Centre on Thursday, November 14, from 9.30am to 2.30pm, building on the success of previous events with hundreds of people due to attend.

Organised by Newark and Sherwood District Council, the Lincoln College Group, and the Advertiser, it is a chance for young people to look at the various options open to them as they prepare to take their next steps in education or the world of work.

The aim of the expo is simple - to improve the aspirations of young people, helping them to feel informed and inspired about a number of career paths available to them, some of which are not the usual run-of-the-mill choices.

This is done in a relaxed, yet informative, setting.

Whether it is an apprenticeship, further education or inspiration for a long-term career, the Future First Expo will have something for you.

The Future First Expo is also a chance for businesses and education providers to meet and engage with their potential future workforce or students.

This year’s main headline sponsor, for a fourth year, is John Deere, with support also coming from RWE.

More than 50 businesses and education and training providers and other organisations will be there to give a flavour of what opportunities they have to offer.

It will be attended by around 1,400 students from secondary schools across the region who are about to make decisions on whether to continue their education or move into the world of work.

Those who are home schooled are welcome to attend and the event is open to the public.

Veronica Dennant, senior lead for business and skills at Newark and Sherwood District Council, is proud to once again organise the expo.

She said: “The Expo is a valuable platform for businesses across a variety of sectors to introduce their industry to young people who might not know about them.

“This, in turn, might spark an interest in a field of work and ignite inspiration for a career the young person had not thought of before.

“We will build on previous events to inspire and raise the aspirations of those attending.”

The first Future First Expo was held in May 2017 and saw 660 students from six senior schools across the district benefit from two sessions of discovery into the world of work.

Since then, the event has continued to grow and establish a reputation for bringing together young people with businesses and education providers to help them with their plans for the future.

Advertiser editor Sharon Hodkin said: “We are delighted to once again be supporting this event, which supports young people in realising their ambitions by showcasing the very many career and educational opportunities available to them locally.

“As well as helping young people decide their next steps, this is a great opportunity for businesses and educators to show what is great about a career in their industry and encourage the next generation to get their feet on the first step of the ladder.
