Save a hen's life for World Animal Day
A flock of hens saved from slaughter by the British Hen Welfare Trust are coming to Newark.
Following last week's national animal awareness day (4 October), the charity has launched a campaign which will see them travel across Britain to give away hen's.
The re-homing event will we be in Newark on Sunday 4th November, giving local residents the chance to adopt the hen's.
There will also be a discussion regarding the benefits of adopting a hen, fresh eggs highlighted as one.
The charity aims to raise the status of animals in order to improve welfare standards around the globe and has helped re-home over 660,000 caged hens, which were otherwise destined to be slaughtered.
The BHWT’s mission is to one day see all hens kept in small flock free range systems where they can roam outside, enjoying fresh air and sun on their feathers.
Jane Howorth MBE, the charity Founder, said: “Not only do hens produce one of the most versatile, nutritious and natural foods on the planet, they also make the most wonderful pets.
The hens we re-home are destined for slaughter once they reach 18 months old; however they have so much life – and love – left to give.
If you have some space in your back garden we’d love to hear from you, as would the hens waiting patiently in their cages.”
