50th edition of CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide published today and here's the pubs in Newark, Southwell, Bingham and surrounding areas that offer a great pint

The 50th edition of CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide has been published and there are many exemplars in the Advertiser area.

To celebrate the 50th edition of the Good Beer Guide, CAMRA’s premier publication featuring the very best pubs to find a great pint in the UK, award-winning author Laura Hadland has showcased the beer highlights across the East Midlands.

Writing in a bespoke foreword for the East Midlands section of the guide, Hadland noted that it is a region of fantastic natural beauty and is also the birthplace of CAMRA’s LocAle scheme.

She wrote: "Developed by the Nottingham branch in 2007 to encourage the celebration of locally made beers and reduce beer miles.

“People who enjoy a drop of cider or perry will feel right at home in the East Midlands, even though it is not a region traditionally associated with their production.”

Turning to the serious business of drinking, on Hadland’s list of highlights for Nottinghamshire in Newark are the Flying Circus, Just Beer Micropub, Organ Grinder and Prince Rupert, while Brews Brothers Micropub, Fernwood, is also a listing

Southwell pubs that feature are the Final Whistle and Old Coach House and in that area's villages, the Old Green Dragon, Oxton, makes the guide.

The Ferryboat Inn, Church Laneham, Bees Knees, Laneham,White Swan, Dunham-on-Trent, Queen's Hotel, East Markham, Marquis of Granby in Granby, Staunton Arms, Woodlark Inn, Lambley, and Olde Red Lion, Wellow, all appear.

In Bingham the Horse and Plough and the Wheatsheaf feature, as does the Royal Oak, Car Colston. Two pubs in Radcliffe make the list and are the Chestnut and the Yard of Ale.

71 Nottinghamshire pubs make the guide in total, which includes nine new entries. 44 breweries feature, one of them a new addition and, sadly, it reveals five breweries have closed since the 2022 edition was published.

Over the county border in Lincolnshire, on our patch, Thorold at Marston, Lion & Royal at Navenby and Hare & Hounds, Fulbeck, make the guide.

A number of Nottinghamshire breweries are also promoted, among them big names such as Castle Rock and Blue Monkey who have their own pubs in the area, but also Cat Asylum in Collingham, Bottle and Glass, Harby, Maypole at Eakring, Milestone at Cromwell, Newark, in Newark.

The Good Beer Guide, which is published annually by CAMRA, helps beer lovers take stock of the local beer scene. As well as covering 394 of the very best pubs across Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland, it keeps track of brewery numbers, and notes a net loss of seven breweries across the counties.

CAMRA national chairman Nik Antona said: “For nearly five decades, the Good Beer Guide has been a comprehensive guide to the UK’s breweries, their ales, and the best outlets to find them in across the country.

“The Good Beer Guide has always had an important role in acting as a barometer of the beer and pub industry. We believe information gleaned from the Guide is absolutely vital in the drive to save our pubs from closure and campaign for policies that better support pubs, local brewers and their customers.

“Whilst we experienced a boom in the brewing industry over recent years, it’s clear that the effects of covid-19 and subsequent cost of living and cost of goods crisis has been keenly felt. I’d encourage everyone to use this guide to seek out the very best examples of pub excellence and support these locals by visiting them.”

The Good Beer Guide, which reviews over 4,500 pubs across the UK, is the definitive beer drinkers’ guide to the very best pints in a variety of styles of pubs to suit individual tastes. Compiled by thousands of independent volunteers, it helps identify significant trends and themes locally and nationally.
