Animals’ return pulls in crowds

A jousting display was among the attractions that helped to draw in the crowds at Southwell Ploughing Match and Show, which attracted about 5,000 visitors on Saturday.

The event, organised by Southwell and District Agricultural Society, was held at Bulcote Farm.

Cattle and sheep classes returned to the show after a year away because of foot and mouth restrictions, and they seemed to help attract the crowds — with the animals proving to be a particular favourite with youngsters.

The show chairman, Mr Tony Hardstaff, said the jousting performances by the Knights of Nottingham were also popular.

He said sunshine throughout the day had helped the show to be a huge success.

“People keep pouring into the gates. It has been a very successful day with good entries in all the classes,” he said.

“It looks like it has been one of the busiest ever shows.”

Other attractions included a parade of the South Notts Hunt, a craft marquee, vintage tractors and display of farming equipment and threshing with steam engines.

There was also a dog show, working horse display, grand parade and various stalls.

In the horticulture and domestic produce marquee, there was a rise in the number of entries of exotic vegetables. A parsley parsnip was entered for the first time.

The honorary secretary of the ladies’ committee, Mrs Alison Crabb, said the quality of the apples was particularly high, but the inconsistent weather had hit some of the specialist flower classes.

Mrs Crabb said the number of entries had still increased overall and the quality was high.

Side-saddle rider, Miss Rebecca Mawer of Moorhouse, was the side-saddle champion.

Riding her home-bred horse, Copthorne Classic, known as Basil, she won two classes and became side-saddle champion.

The show president, Mr Tim Farr, is the farm manager of Bulcote Farm, which is owned by Severn Trent.
