Protest against watersports at Balderton Lake organised at YMCA Community and Activity Village this weekend
Another protest has been organised to fight plans for watersports on a lake.
Campaigners, all dressed in green, will head to the YMCA Community and Activity Village on Lord Hawke Way on Sunday to protest the YMCA's aim for canoeing and kayaking on Balderton Lake.
The YMCA says watersports will benefit the area but protesters say it will pose a threat to existing wildlife on the lake.
People are invited to join the protest from 1-2pm.
"With the threat of YMCA's watersports at Balderton Lake, our wildlife could soon disappear," says a protest flier titled Balderton Lake Needs You!
"Join our peaceful protest wearing green to stand up for them. All ages welcome."
At a recent Balderton Parish Council meeting where the plans were discussed, executive director for the YMCA Newark and Sherwood Todd Cauthorn said a sonar survey had revealed nothing on the lake bed — and that the report provided had been done by an ecologist, with a second more up-to-date one being prepared, and a breeding birds survey to follow.
"The ecologist has written all the reports which contradict what you have heard and what you are being told," he said.
"We would never allow anyone to do an activity that's not safe."
