A rescue dog that is deaf is looking for a new home in time for Christmas.

Jess, an eight-year-old Labrador/Staffie-cross arrived at Halfway Home Dog Rescue, Collingham, nine months ago and is being looked after by Miss Janice Bradley, a volunteer at the centre, who also helps by fostering dogs until they can find a permanent home.

She thinks people may be put off giving Jess a home because she is deaf.

“It really isn’t a problem,” Miss Bradley said.

“Although Jess is deaf she can obey hand commands and I often forget there is a problem.

“Jess loves walks and enjoys snoozing on the sofa or on your lap.”

Miss Bradley said Jess walked well on a lead but her deafness meant she could not be let off unless in a secure environment.

'Lively and excitable'

“She can be left on her own for a few hours if you are at work and she is happy both on her own or with other dogs.

“She can be lively and excitable so would not be suitable for families with young children.”

Miss Bradley has been fostering dogs for two years and has been a volunteer for five.

She decided to help at the centre as she loves dogs.

Anyone interested in adopting Jess can contact the centre on 07808 003152.

- A Christmas coffee morning is being held at the centre on Sunday from 11am to 3pm with proceeds going towards helping dogs in need.

The centre is appealing for shoeboxes filled with treats and other dog essentials to be taken to the coffee morning. They can also be dropped off at the centre at other times.
