Applications flood in for jobs at The Range

A job centre has been inundated with applications to work at a major national retailer that is due to open a store in Newark.

Newark Job Centre said it had received 167 job applications and many more enquiries about working at home, leisure and garden outlet, The Range.

The store will open in the former B&Q on Northern Road, Newark, creating around 100 jobs.

Sue Fielding, customer service leader at the Department for Work and Pensions, said she understood The Range was opening in November.

A spokesman for the company, however, said it had not set an opening date.

"There has been a lot of interest."

Sue Fielding said: “We are helping people with their CVs and getting them ready for a wide variety of jobs at the store.

“The vacancies are from management level through to team leaders and store assistants.

“There has been a lot of interest and we have been inundated with enquiries and applications.

“The Range has been great to work with. They are supportive and want to get the best out of people.

“Because of that they have had a good response rate.”

The Range is one of a number of companies advertising multiple vacancies at the job centre.

The BP petrol station on the A1/A46/A17 roundabout is looking for retail staff and Knowhow is increasing its workforce ahead of the busy Christmas period.

Carriages Café, which has opened in the station building at Newark Castle Station, is recruiting, as well as the Roman Way restaurant on Lincoln Road.

Caledonian Modular, which makes temporary modular buildings, also has a range of vacancies at its depot in Carlton-on-Trent.

In Newark and Sherwood, the number of people claiming unemployment benefits rose for the third consecutive month.

A total of 1,035 people in the district claimed benefits in August compared with 1,030 in July and 955 in August last year.

The number of 18 to 24-year-olds claiming unemployment benefits rose slightly from 250 in July to 255 in August. In August last year the total was 245.

Sue Fielding said the number of young people claiming benefits was expected to drop as many would take on apprenticeships this month.
