Armed police seal off Newark street
Armed police have sealed off a Newark street tonight.
Police say they are in negotiation with a man who has locked himself inside a house in Trinity Road.
Officers were called to the scene at around 6.45pm this evening (Monday February 3) following reports a 30-year-old man was inside. Notts Police say it is not known if he is armed.
However, they were responding to an allegation the man has a firearm.
Police are at the address and specially-trained officers are negotiating with the man to ensure a peaceful conclusion. It is not believed anyone else is inside the address.
It was claimed locally police were dealing with a hostage-taking situation which is believed to be domestic-related.
It is also suggested locally that a gun is involved.
Three adults who were in the house with the man left voluntarily.
The police helicopter is over the scene.
One man at scene, Andrew Wright, 18, of Gorse Road, said: "I've ever seen as many police as this before.
"Some police with riot shields arrived at Trinity Road and looked like they were ready to bang the door down."
Another onlooker said: "I saw the helicopter up overhead and armed police arriving at the street."
Local residents are asked to remain within their homes to allow officers to carry out their enquiries and are thanked for their co-operation and patience.
