Arrest after officer bitten and headbutted during assault in Newark

An officer was left dazed after being viciously headbutted while attempting to arrest a teenager.

Following a report of a separate incident in Lombard Street, Newark, last night (Monday, January 31), at around 11.50pm officers spotted a man knocking and falling over a bin.

Officers then approached the man before things turned violent and a scuffle broke out.

One officer was then spat at hitting him on the right cheek and upper torso while the other was headbutted and bitten on his thumb causing immediate pain and discomfort.

An 18-year-old boy was arrested at the scene on suspicion of common assault of an emergency worker and assault by beating of an emergency worker.

He remains in custody as enquiries continue.

Inspector Sue Wain, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Once again our officers have been subject to violence and hostility while out keeping the public safe.

“Thankfully, in this case, the officers did not suffer any serious or lasting physical injuries but even so this type of behaviour as we have stated over and over again will not be tolerated by the force.

“It is not in an officer's job description to be beaten and assaulted when all they are doing is their duty and trying to keep the people of Nottingham safe.

“Anyone who treats our officers in this way will be dealt with and we treat any incidents like this extremely seriously.”
