Artists display original artwork in annual exhibition at Hoveringham Village Hall this weekend
More than 140 original works of art by local artists will be on display at Hoveringham Village Hall this weekend.
The annual exhibition by the Soft Edges Art Group showcases paintings in different mediums, most of which are available to buy.
It was in the 1990s when portrait painter John R. Townsend, encouraged by a villager, decided to teach a few students in his Hoveringham studio.
The group, and the exhibition, grew from there.
Group member Joyce Rick said. “Under John’s guidance we gradually became more proficient and began exhibiting our work in Hoveringham Village Hall.
“Last year we celebrated the 21st anniversary of the exhibition.”
The group has developed over the years and meets at 10am on Mondays in the village hall to paint, and to support and critique each others’ work in order to further improve their styles and techniques.
New or experienced artists are always welcome to join.
“Over the years our exhibition has gone from strength to strength. We have a very loyal following and also invite local professional artists to participate in our exhibition,” said another group member, Simon Tilley.
For the first time there will also be some three-dimensional works of art on display this year, as the group welcomes established sculptor Darius Martisius.
As usual, there will be a raffle prize, which will be an original work of art, by Richard Simkin, and as visitors walk around the exhibition they can vote for their favourite painting.
“It’s just a bit of fun, no prize for the winner; but your opinion matters and is appreciated,” said member Christine Gouldby.
The tea room will be open for drinks, coffee and cake, and members of the group are always on hand (some working on their paintings) to chat about all aspects of the exhibition.
The invitation-only preview evening is tomorrow from 7pm, but the exhibition is open for anyone to drop in on Saturday and Sunday between 10 am and 4.30pm.
There is free admission and parking, easy access and facilities for the disabled.
For more information or an invitation to the preview evening contact Christine Gouldby on 07774 608974.
