Newark author Ben Skipper releases new book detailing Operation Market Garden
Newark author Ben Skipper has released a new book on Operation Market Garden.
The book offers a detailed insight into the wartime bridge too far operation. It is aimed at military modellers.
The book features an easy guide to copy building, painting, weathering and detailing techniques to help bring models of the operation to life.
It also includes photographs, maps, a synopsis of the battle, military hardware and the key personalities.
Separated into two elements, Market, the airborne assault, was designed to capture the vital bridges across the many Dutch rivers and canals that were needed. Garden, the ground assault, would ensure the bridges were soon part of a wider Allied salient.
However, planning and intelligence was as not as thorough as it had been in previous operations and Market Garden turned from glorious adventure, with easily achievable aims, to an almost devastating defeat.
The book also looks at four pieces of military hardware that were involved in these legendary battles, including the Triumph HW3 motorcycle, the German Sd.Kfz.2 Kettenkrad, the British Cromwell and the Panther Ausf G.
A quartermaster section shows the development and operational use of the four vehicles that were involved in Market Garden, with selection of historical and contemporary photos and illustrations. It also features details of model kits.
The book is published by Pen and Sword Books, as part of its Battle Craft collection.
