Birds Bakery, which has stores in Newark and Bingham, raises the dough with £10,000 donation to The Children's Trust
A bakery has raised £10,000 for charity following its very own doughnut week.
After the cancellation of National Doughnut Week in May, due to the coronavirus pandemic, Birds Bakery decided to hold its own one week-long celebration to support the UK’s leading charity for children with brain injury.
The family run bakery, which has stores in Newark and Bingham, sold 45,758 doughnuts across its East Midlands stores throughout the week and donated 20p from every doughnut sold to the children’s charity.
Lesley Bird, chief operating officer at Birds Bakery, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have raised £9,152 for The Children’s Trust, which we topped up with an additional £848 to raise the total amount to a fantastic £10,000.
“The Children’s Trust is a charity that we have supported for a number of years and is incredibly close to our hearts.
"It is committed to raising £7 million a year to run vital services for children with brain injury and we are so pleased that we have been able to contribute to that total figure. We really hope it will make a difference to those in need.”
As part of Doughnut Week, the bakery — which has been running since 1919 — brought back two famous Birds specials for one week only, including the strawberry doughnut and the lemon and lime doughnut.
Lesley said: “We enjoyed seeing some of our old favourites back in our stores again and we are really grateful to those who have purchased our doughnuts to help us raise thousands of pounds for such a great cause.
“We also donated a number of doughnuts to nearby police, ambulance and fire stations, as our way of saying thank you for all their hard work, particularly in the recent challenging times.”
Harrison Galliven, community fundraising executive at The Children’s Trust, said: “We’re extremely grateful for Birds’ continued support.
"To keep our vital services running, we need to raise £7 million a year and the covid-19 crisis has hit our fundraising hard.
"The money raised from Doughnut Week will help us to support more children and families across the UK, affected by brain injury.”
Birds Bakery has been supporting the charity for more than 16 years and raised a total of £9,000 last year, by selling around 45,000 doughnuts during National Doughnut Week, which took place in May 2019.
