Ballroom filled to sound of music
Students take centre stage in Newark Town Hall today for a concert they hope will raise the profile of the town’s school of violinmaking.
The students from the school, which is part of Newark College, will perform as the Trent Chamber Academy, directed by Mr Roger Bryan.
A member of the orchestra, Mr Adam Winskill, 25, said Newark Town Council had supported the event.
He said: “A few years ago we often did concerts here to raise money for the mayor’s charity. Hopefully we can do something like that again.
“Apart from having fun and giving everyone a chance to play in an orchestra, which there isn’t really in Newark, hopefully we are helping to raise the profile of the violin school in Newark because, surprisingly, a lot of people don’t know it’s here and how famous it is.”
Mr Winskill said the orchestra, which has about 20 members, was founded in 2002.
He said: “We really only perform together when the students have the motivation to do something.
“We most often meet to accompany Newark Choral Society.”
The concert, in the ballroom at 7.30pm, will feature music by Elgar, Mendelssohn and Grieg.
Tickets are available on the door.
