Newark and Sherwood Concert Band prepares for its annual fundraising concert at the Palace Theatre, where it will perform another bonanza of popular music entitled Sounds of Stage and Screen
Newark and Sherwood Concert Band is preparing for its annual fundraising concert at the Palace Theatre, where it will perform another bonanza of popular music.
Sounds of Stage and Screen will be held on Saturday, October 14, and will build on recent successful performances at The Renaissance at Kelham Hall and Newark Brass Explosion.
In a first, Newark and Sherwood Development Band will perform alongside the concert band, giving its members their first experience of the big stage.
The development band was set up in 2019 as an opportunity for more musicians in the community to take part in group music-making.
Kelly Lashbrook, one of the band’s directors said: “This band has been a tremendous success and with fewer opportunities than there used to be, it gives new and returning brass, woodwind or percussion musicians the chance to play in an ensemble.
“We want to open it to even more people and on Sunday, October 8, we’re holding a free to join play day at Winthorpe Community Centre.”
The event will feature afternoon rehearsals and workshops followed by a short concert. More information can be found at https://www.nscb.uk/playday
Musical director, Colum J O’Shea said: “I am really excited about the development band and the concert band playing together.
“We have put together another exciting and varied programme with pieces ranging from The Barber of Seville to the Muppets’ Theme.”
Proceeds contribute to the ongoing cost of funding the bands and will also help with the band’s planned tour to Newark’s Twin Town, Emmendingen, in 2024.
Tickets are available from the Palace Theatre box office or online from its website.
