Big turnout greets hunt

Hundreds of people greeted the South Notts Hunt at its traditional New Year’s Day meet in Newark Market Place.

The joint master, Kate Cressey, said it was welcome support, particularly as the issue of repealing the ban on hunting with dogs was back on the political agenda.

“We need all the support we can get with a big political fight coming up, so it is heart-warming to see so many people,” she said.

The hunt met in front of the town hall before moving on to the Hawton area.

Town councillor Mr Laurence Goff was a lone protester, as he has been every year since the hunt returned to the Market Place.
