Bloomin' marvellous: The annual Newark in Bloom arrives

An event dedicated to making Newark a more colourful and flowery place arrived on Wednesday.

The Newark in Bloom event saw judges potter around the town rating its fantastic floral displays as part of the East Midlands in Bloom competition.

Newark has already won the gold prize in the awards for two consecutive years running and hopes to wow the judges again with the astounding work and commitment of the town's guerilla gardeners.

It comes after former chairman and secretary of the committee, George and Gillie Wilkinson, stepped down from their roles in February after 10 years.

The couple first got involved when the late councillor, Marika Tribe, asked them to form a committee to take the town into Britain in Bloom, with the aim of getting the gold award.

But still flowering with success, new committee secretary, Vivienne Hall, said the town's mayor trailed around with judges who were particularly impressed with the Sconce and Devon park, as well as the Hawton allotments.

"Newark in Bloom was really lovely and got the Market Place buzzing. The Holy Trinity School gardening group made some lovely banners recycled from Newark College, that were put around the some run-down areas near the river side between the Water's Edge Bar and where boat trips leave in the town.

"The whole town just looked fantastic and people even commented saying how much effort everyone must have put in," she added.

And with the Newark in Bloom committee being made up from volunteers, Vivienne thanked everyone involved for making the occasion extra special and "certainly doing Newark proud".

She added: "A lot of this work would not have happened without everyone who went out of their way to help. We also had people from Newark College's art and design course taking pictures of the event.

"It's not just one day either, it's a programme that is on all year round."

Results from the judging will be announced in September.
