Offshoot of Southwell’s famed Bramley Apple tree to be planted in the Hearty Goodfellow pub’s garden

An offshoot from the original Bramley Apple tree is to be planted just yards away in a pub garden.

It is the first planting supported by the Mother Bramley Apple Legacy Fund — which aims to maintain and enhance the famed fruit tree as it becomes older — and will take place on St George’s Day, Wednesday, April 23.

The cutting is to be planted in the nearby garden of the Hearty Goodfellow pub to celebrate its recent CAMRA award for outstanding cider.

The planting will be carried out by the great-grandchildren of the famous apple’s founder Henry Merryweather, Celia Merryweather and sister Eileen Connet, alongside publicans Tony Marriot and Emma Hopkins, and the artist who organised the legacy crowdfunder and recently painted the tree, Dan Llywelyn Hall.

Celia said: “History carries on, as does the Bramley into the future bringing the pleasure of such a versatile, and quintessentially British apple to everyone who enjoys a fruit of quality in so many different forms.

“Planting a Bramley tree on St Georges Day is a perfect way to celebrate the award given to the Hearty Goodfellow in Southwell, where it all began.”

The veteran Bramley tree was grown from a pip planted in 1805 by Mary Ann Brailsford at her Church Street home. She moved out after her marriage, likely before any fruit was produced.

The Bramley Apple was first sold by Henry Merryweather in 1876, and was named after a later owner of the house and tree, Matthew Bramley.

The tree planting ceremony at the Hearty Goodfellow is is open to the public, and will take place at 6pm.
