Bringing a flavour of the Caribbean
Blue skies and soaring temperatures were ideal for the Big Caribbean Cook Out in Newark Market Place on Monday.
Howard Shaw, a chef from Jamaica who runs Howie’s Jamaican cuisine and catering service in Leicester, was among those busy cooking.
“This is my first time in Newark,” he said. “It’s a great Market Place.
Mark Smith and his daughter Lilly, 7, of Balderton, were among the visitors.
“I wanted Lilly to try the goat curry but she wasn’t too sure so she settled for an ice-cream instead,” he said.
“We have had a great time and it’s good to see so many in the town.”
The festival featured live music and fairground rides for children. Entertainer Poncho Pete Higham, of Grimsby, was kept busy making balloon models for youngsters.
The event was organised by The Community Giants, a not-for-profit organisation based in Leicester set up to help young people become productive members of the community.
Newark markets operator Mr Ian Harrison hoped the event would provide a platform for a partnership with The Community Giants.
“They will potentially look to nurture and provide opportunities for young people in Newark and give them skills and confidence to start their own business,” he said.
