Newark Art Gallery and Studio moving to new home across the road in Kirkgate, Newark
An art gallery is making a move to bigger and brighter premises.
But visitors will not have to travel too much further as Newark Art Gallery is moving to a new home just across the road from its current premises on Kirkgate, Newark.
The gallery, run by David and Debbie Moore, is currently at 37 Kirkgate is moving to space between Newark Healthfood Shop and Sibley’s Butchers in the next few weeks.
“The new place is a more useable space and gives us some more room,” said David.
“I love the building we are in at the moment. It is a beautiful 15th Century building in Kirkgate.
“But our existing lease was coming to an end so we looked around to see if there is anywhere that is more useable.
“This new premises is a more modern, fresher look for the business. The ceilings are a lot higher, it is a lot lighter and brighter.
“The layout of the new place is more conducive to working with other artists and expanding on things such as teaching others.
“There is a lot more we can do with this new space, we can make it more into a community arts facility.”
“I didn’t want to move from Kirkgate, we get a lot of foot traffic from people going up to view the church and visit the market. We are also very close to the town centre.
David and his wife lived in South Africa, where they ran an art gallery in Johannesburg, for many years before moving back to the UK.
“We wanted to stay in the area, we love Newark and the people here,” said David.
“Things are closing down on the high street but I believe in Newark and that things will pull through.
“The independent retailers in Newark are fantastic and there is a really great entrepreneurial spirit in the town.
“The pandemic was difficult but we have come out the other side and we are still here.
“The more we stick with the town, the more that we work with the town and the public — getting them what they need and what they want, the better the town will be in the long run.
“We are looking forward to welcoming regulars and new visitors to our new home in the near future.”
