Businesses are being urged to support a course that aims to make a difference to the lives of young people in the area.

The Prince’s Trust 12-week team programme is due to begin in Newark on January 30.

The free course offers people aged 16 to 25 the opportunity to develop their skills, confidence and motivation so they have a better chance of finding a job, or moving into education or training.

Two previous courses have been held at Hawtonville Community Centre, Newark, which, it is hoped will be the venue again this time.

The course leaders, Marie Naylor and Corporal Barry Harteveld, are calling for local businesses to come forward to provide help.

Companies that can offer work experience placements are being sought, along with any firms that can provide materials for a community project.

During their course the team, consisting of up to 20 young people, will decide on a project that will benefit the community.

Voluntary groups in the area have been contacted and asked to get in touch if they would like any help.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue will deliver the course on behalf of the Prince’s Trust.

Support officer Marie Naylor said: “If we can make this work there is the possibility of further teams being run in this area.”

She said backing for the programme in Newark had been given by Nottinghamshire County Council and Newark and Sherwood District Council.

Corporal Harteveld, who is on secondment from the RAF to the Prince’s Trust, said: “We could make a big difference in this area.”

He said the course worked because 96% of young people who took part went on to find employment, further education or training.

The course itself offers a nationally recognised qualification on completion.

People from any background across the area are being invited to sign up, with the requirement that they are a school leaver.

The Prince’s Trust will have a recruitment stall in Newark Market Place today and informal interviews will begin next week.
