Renowned Southwell Racecourse going from strength to strength as they were named among the top 15 in the country for race day experience and have a full schedule of events packed into their 2023 racing calender




Southwell Racecourse was recently named among the top 15 in the country for race day experience, according to the Quality Assured Racecourse Scheme.

And for Mark Clayton, the course’s executive director, it is just reward for a team committed to providing the very best visit for race-goers.

It has been a busy but productive start to the year for Southwell Racecourse with 14 race days completed in January.

“We were the busiest racecourse in the UK for the month,” said Mark.

“We have eight race days in February and we are gearing up for an exciting 2023.

“There are a lot of great things planned at Southwell Racecourse.”

Tomorrow evening sees the course host floodlit flat racing with what promises to be an excellent night of entertainment.

Gates open at 3.15pm and tickets, which cost from £12 in advance, gives patrons access to public bars, eateries, and betting outlets — along with views of the racing action including the parade ring and pre-parade ring.

The racing will start at 5.15pm and will feature seven races on the card.

Children aged 17 and under go free to most of the race meets when accompanied by an adult.

Mark said guest experience was at the forefront of everything they did and the course were constantly considering different ideas to ensure race-goers have an enjoyable time.

On track, there has been some exciting action,

Last Friday’s meeting, for example, saw 104 runners over eight races providing thrilling viewing.

The course has gone through extensive changes in recent times with a new tapeta surface for the course applied in December 2021, which allows for all-weather racing.

The tapeta surface is made up of the finest silica sand, wax and fibres that have been extensively researched and simulate the root structure of turf.

The course is now widely regarded as one of the best tracks of it’s kind in the world.

“The new surface is bringing more and better quality horses,” said Clayton.

This ensures that race goers are treated to the highest standards of racing.

And there is plenty of events planned at the course to bring in the crowds.

After tomorrow’s fixture, the next action is on Tuesday and Thursday next week.

On April 9, the course will host its Easter Eggstravaganza Fun Day, which is expected to attract thousands of visitors.

It features free entry and activities for children, including funfair rides, Easter egg hunt, face painting, and Shetland Pony racing.

Also planned is a gentlemen’s evening on April 28, where the men can get suited and booted for the occasion, and, to mark the coronation, a Royal Race Day is planned for the Bank Holiday Weekend.

But the highlight of the racecourse’s year is the Advertiser Ladies Day, this year taking place on August 20, which attracts more than 8,000 visitors every year.
