Cafè bar chain Lounges takes next step closer to becoming a reality in Newark’s Buttermarket

Cafè bar chain Lounges took a big step closer to becoming a reality in Newark’s Buttermarket after it sailed through planning.

The outline of the proposal was relayed to Newark and Sherwood District Council’s planning committee on Tuesday and the application was voted on with virtually no debate.

It was passed quickly and unanimously, with conditions.

The council applied for consent for alterations and conversion of units 4, 9, 10 and 11 to form a single unit, which paves the way for Lounges, as well as permission for using the Buttermarket for shop, business and leisure purposes.

The units in question form the section to the left if walking through the Buttermarket from Middlegate to Chain Lane.

The application also called for minor alterations to the facade.

Listed Building Consent was also needed because the building, which opened in 1884, is joined to Newark Town Hall and has a listed curtilage and is of historical importance.

The Grade 1 listed building, which also comprises the former Royal Exchange, was bought by Newark and Sherwood District Council and Newark Town Council for £800,000 before it could be sold at auction, and is managed by them. The purchase completed in February.

It had become largely vacant.

The committee heard the town council were supportive and that the objections of English Heritage had been overcome.
