Newark cafe Strays announces closure
A town centre cafe has closed its doors just over a year after moving into new premises.
Strays, which has been open at The Ossington since January 2024 and was previously based on Middlegate, has officially announced its closure after days of speculation.
A statement on the business’ website said: “After 20 incredible years in Newark, it’s with heavy hearts that we announce our closure.
“To everyone who supported us along the way — thank you. You’ve been part of a truly special journey, and we’re so grateful for the memories we’ve made together.
“Like many small businesses, we struggled to bounce back after Covid, and with the continued challenges of trading locally, we’ve had to make the difficult decision to close our doors.”
Furniture was seen being moved out of the Beastmarket Hill venue on Friday, and the business has also promised any outstanding afternoon tea bookings will be refunded.
The business has faced controversies over staff pay — with former employees alleging incomplete wages, late paydays, and missed pension contributions. Strays management denied these claims.
The family-owned cafe had been known for homemade cakes, coffee, and live jazz.
“Thank you for having us — it’s been an honour to be part of Newark’s story. We wish you all the very best,” Strays’ statement concluded.
