Call for stop sign to slow drivers
A resident has called for a stop sign to be installed at a busy Newark junction where there have been several near misses.
Mrs Valerie Ashton said speeding drivers flouted a give way sign at the junction of Appletongate and Magnus Street — putting others in danger.
Mrs Valerie Ashton lives in a converted coach-house opposite the former Advertiser offices on Appletongate.
In November, a car crashed into the side of her Grade II-listed property, built in 1737, where she has lived since 1996.
Mrs Ashton said it showed the damage that could be done by motorists ignoring warning signs at the junction.
“The car hit the house with such a thud,” she said. “It caused quite a bit of damage.”
Mrs Ashton regularly sees motorists ignoring the give way sign — some driving faster than the 30mph limit.
“I have been asking for a stop sign at the junction for years,” said Mrs Ashton.
“The majority of drivers are OK, but some are not. There are near misses all the time.
“Some drivers rev up and down the road — it makes my house shake.
“My fear is that it might take someone being badly injured for something to get done. That is what people are worried about.
“There are nurseries on Appletongate and the Orchard School, so there are lots of children about.”
Mrs Ashton said she also saw motorists driving up Appletongate from the junction with Magnus Street, which was not allowed.
Via East Midlands had not responded to a request for comment as the Advertiser went to press.
