Cameras aim to slow drivers on A614

Speed cameras are to be installed on a dangerous road as part of safety measures being introduced by Nottinghamshire County Council.

Several improvements have been made on the A614 between Nottingham and Ollerton.

Over the last five years 283 people were killed or injured on the road.

The county council has improved signs and road markings and introduced a 50mph speed limit.

To ensure drivers keep to the new speed limit, cameras will be installed to record average speed over the length of road travelled.

Shortly after an accident in 2009, which claimed the lives of six people, including four teenagers, Mr Jim Fitzpatrick, who was the then Labour Government’s road safety minister, visited the scene.

The safety of the road was debated at Westminster in November 2010 when the MP for Sherwood, Mr Mark Spencer, called for more money for improvements and improved driver training to tackle the problems.

He called for money to be spent improving junctions at A614/B6030 Rose Cottage junction, Mickledale Lane, the junction of Ollerton roundabout/A614 and the Gravelly Hollow junction.

Coalition Government transport minister Mr Mike Penning called for safety improvements after a visit in June. The 50mph speed limit was introduced shortly afterwards.
