Villagers have succeeded in their efforts to get a speed limit reduction.

Great North Road has been the subject of many petitions over the years, led by members of Cromwell Parish Council.

Council chairman Mr David Swift said that it was finally the right time.

“We have wanted a 30mph speed limit for decades but it has always been refused,” he said.

“It wasn’t possible to decelerate in time to meet the speed limit so it was always denied.

“I just hope that people now obey the rules.”

County councillor for the area, Mr Bruce Laughton, said it had been a top priority for a number of years.

He said: “It’s a relief for all the residents.

“Great North Road is a wide open road so it’s been difficult to achieve, and this is why it’s taken so long.

“We are hoping to install a temporary interactive speed sign to help enforce the change.”

Marjorie Goss, a member of the the parish council who has been involved in the campaign for about seven years, said: “We discuss it at every parish meeting.

“It has great that it has finally been achieved as this is a collective effort from the whole village.”
