Beaumond House Community Hospice, Newark, is appealing for more volunteers

More volunteers are needed for a charity which provides palliative care in Newark.

Beaumond House Community Hospice needs more volunteers to help provide a varied programme of activities for the day therapy patients.

Day therapy co-ordinator, Wilma Robinson, said she would love to see more people from the local community come in and help provide entertainment.

“The patients really love music and it would be wonderful if we could get small choirs or musicians to visit,” she said.

“It may be that you have a hobby that you could share with us or a story to share.

“If so we would love to hear from you.”

Patients attending day therapy say they really look forward to coming to the hospice and it is often a highlight of their week.

Joan Denny has been going there since the summer and said she loves it.

“I came along to an open day and was invited to come along to one of the sessions and that was it,” she said.

Joan has made many friends since coming to the sessions.

“We support each other and share our good times and our troubles,” she said. “We laugh a lot.”

Barbara Sawyer has been coming to the hospice since May and said she looks forward to coming.

“I love the company and the laughs,” she said.

Brenda Needham and said it has helped her regain her confidence and enable her to do things she used to do.

“My sewing takes me longer but I have learned some new crafts with the help of the wonderful staff and volunteers who are here,” she said.

“Coming here to Beaumond House is the highlight of my week.

“Thank you to everyone who makes it a happy place to come.

“It helps make the bad times easier and the good times better.”
