Care home resident marks 101st birthday with visit from son

A resident at Lancaster Grange, Fernwood, was visited by her son from Canada on her 101st birthday on Tuesday.

Mrs Dorothea Jackson, known by her middle name of Madge, was joined by her elder son, Mr John Jackson.

She has another son, Mr Paul Jackson, who lives in Lincoln, as well as four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She also has a sister, Anne Hamer, 92, who travelled from Llandudno for a family lunch yesterday.

Madge moved to Lancaster Grange 3½ years ago.

“I have been very happy here,” she said.

She was married in Mickleover, in 1941, to Mr Geoff Jackson and they moved to Grantham, where he was stationed in the RAF.

The couple were married for 73 years until Mr Jackson died in 2014, aged 98.

The couple received messages from the Queen on their 60th and 70th wedding anniversaries, and Mrs Jackson also received a message on her 100th birthday.

She worked in a Grantham hair salon for many years, and also ran a hairdressing business from home.

“She carried on until she was about 80,” Mr John Jackson said. “She still rode her bike until she was 90.”

A tree was planted at Lancaster Grange for Mrs Jackson’s 100th birthday.

Tuesday’s birthday was marked at the care home with a party for residents, and entertainment from singer Marcello, arranged specially for the event.

Mr John Jackson said it was hard to choose a present for someone who had reached 101, but that his mother liked pretty blouses, hairbands and scarves.
