The RSPCA is appealing for information after a cat was strangled with a mobile phone charger cable and the socket shoved down its throat.

The body of the male Bengal cat was found by a member of the public on January 11 in a walkway at Beacon Hill, Newark.

The cat was found with the charger, designed for use in a car, wrapped around its neck and dumped inside a plastic bag, which was inside a blue carrier bag.

An examination by a vet showed the most likely cause of death was strangulation.

The cat owner has been traced and told about what happened.

RSPCA inspector Mr Ian Callingham said it was the second Bengal cat that the owner, a woman from Lithuania, had lost and he could not rule out the possibility she was targeted by someone with a grudge.

The first cat went missing and had not been found despite being microchipped.

Mr Callingham said the second vanished on the first day it was allowed out of the house.

He said the cat must have suffered greatly.

“This is an awful case of animal cruelty and it is sickening to think how painful this cat’s death would have been,” he said.

“It is bizarre that someone would then just dump the body in a busy area.”

Anyone with information about the incident should call Mr Callingham on 0300 123 8018.
