Bingham firefighter retires after 33 years with Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service

A frontline hero who has kept a town safe for over 33 years has retired.

Last week people gathered at Bingham Fire Station to say goodbye to Firefighter Mumford, who retired following 33 and a half years’ service.

He joined Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service as an on-call firefighter in February 1990, and since then has played a vital part in keeping Bingham, and the rest of Nottinghamshire, safe.

Past, present and future fire crews joined management from around the service, the Mayor of Bingham and representatives from the Fire Brigade’s Union and The Fire Fighters Charity, to congratulate Firefighter Mumford and reminisce on his time as a firefighter during his final drill night on station.

Bingham Fire Station’s watch manager, Ashley Fullard, described Firefighter Mumford as a credit to the fire service.

He said: “Over 30 years I think about how many incidents he has dealt with, the community value he has added and the contribution he has had to saving many, many lives — what an accolade to go into his retirement with.

“He has been an absolute role model of an employee, and I am extremely proud to say he was part of the team at Bingham for so long.”

Assistant chief fire officer, Damien West, said: “I have the honour on behalf of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service to be here to say thank you, not only to you but to your family as well — being an on-call firefighter doesn’t just have an impact on your life, it has an impact on those around you too.

“You have had a fantastic career and you are definitely leaving a legacy behind you as you hand in your pager tonight. So, I just want to say thank you, and congratulations.”

Firefighter Mumford was left speechless following the evening and the presentation of certificates and gifts but he did say a huge thank you to every single person who has been part of his Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service journey.
