Chairman of Balderton branch of British Legion wants more people to join

The new chairman of the Balderton branch of the Royal British Legion is aiming to encourage more people to join the organisation.

Mr Ben Mayall hopes to raise awareness of what the legion and the branch can do for its membership.

The branch has around 50 members, with an average of 12 attending the meetings, which take place on the second Monday of every month at William Ghent House, Wilfred Avenue.

Mr Mayall said: “It’s our job to connect with ex-Servicemen and women and anyone else who would like to join.

“A lot of people don’t know that this branch exists. I didn’t either. I moved to Balderton four years ago and only joined in November.

“The legion has done a lot for me over the past few years.”

Mr Mayall was diagnosed with cancer soon after moving to Balderton.

“When the legion found out they were straight on the phone and writing me letters,” he said.

“They really look after their members. I was given a fortnight away in Bridlington with other ex-Servicemen and women, but I only took a week.

“I went with my wife — this has all affected her just as much — perhaps even more.

“It has really changed the way I look at things.”

Mr Mayall said it was like being at a five-star hotel.

He said: “The trips are for ex-Servicemen, their families and carers.

“The hostel in Bridlington was right on the sea front, all the parking was free and there was entertainment in the evening. It felt like a five star hotel.

“It’s important people can see what the British Legion can do for ex-servicemen.

“When I came back I wanted to do something. I bumped into Ken (the former chairman) and it is the best thing I have ever done.”

The Balderton branch raised more than £15,000 during the 2018 Poppy Appeal, which was the highest ever total for the branch.

Mr Mayall is hoping in his new role as chairman he will be able to encourage more people to join and take part in activities and meetings throughout the year.
