Chairman to head cockerel appeal

A chairman has been appointed to head the committee that will be raising the money needed to ensure Newark's golden cockerel is safely returned to the spire of the parish church.
He is Mr Roger Allton, of Brewers Wharf, Newark, who has already contributed about £3,500 to the fund.
Some of the money was given instead of flowers, at his request, by mourners at his wife's funeral last year and the rest was raised in sponsorship when he ran the Newark Half-marathon in August.
The church needs to raise £90,000 to pay for the work which will include repairing the top four metres of stonework.
