Changes to speed limits near Thurgaton receive mixed response

A new 40mph speed limit has been put in place on multiple roads around a village.

Roads leading into Thurgarton have a new, lowered speed limit to help prevent speeding within the village.

The new 40mph limit affects Nottingham Road and Southwell Road, which were previously 50mph, and Bleasby Road which has been reduced from the national speed limit.

On Nottingham Road the limit starts 680 metres from the 30mph zone and on Southwell Road 660 metres from the 30mph limits.

Bleasby Road has the 40mph limit between the end of the 30mph zones at the boundaries of Thurgarton and Goverton.

Via East Midlands claim the changes will act as a buffer and encourage drivers to reduce their speed before they reach the village boundaries.

The change has had mixed responses from Thurgarton residents who have commented about the change online.

One Facebook user said: “Yet another speed limit reduction for what seems like no apparent reason despite cars becoming safer.”

Another added: “People definitely do drive too fast through Thurgarton, but I think that people who have disregard for the speed limit won’t obey the new 40 signs either.”

However, the new speed limits have also received some positive responses.

One commenter said: “There’s been accidents where the central lay-by is, where people pull out the lay-by and cars are coming round the blind bend at 60mph.

“And on the other side from Southwell, there’s horse riders who have to ride along that 60mph zone from the tack shop which is really dangerous. Probably why the limits have been put in place.”
