The owners of a Newark pub are toasting its success after it was named the best in the East Midlands just two years after opening.

According to the 40th edition of the Campaign for Real Ale’s Good Beer Guide, there is no better place for a pint in the region than the Just Beer micro pub, in Swan and Salmon Yard, off Castlegate, Newark.

The pub was opened in 2010 by four friends, Mr Phil Ayling, Mr Duncan Neil, Mr Stuart Young and Mr Paul Murphy.

Mr Ayling said: “We’re absolutely stunned. There are lots of pubs that have been established for far longer than us so it is humbling to win it.”

In total, 96 pubs from the East Midlands are included in the guide.

Explaining the attractions of Just Beer, which comprises just one room, it reads: “It has minimalist decor, helpful bar staff and a varied clientele.

“At least four ever-changing beers are sourced from small or micro-breweries and rare beers are often available. No spirits, keg, lager, smooth or bottles, and no pool or TV.”

Mr Ayling said he thought a wide range of beers and friendly service were the keys to success.

“We set out to bring beers here that you don’t see very often, and then it just gets spread around by word of mouth,” he said.

“We rarely have the same beer on twice and have had over 1,400 different beers since opening.

“There are 27 breweries within 20 miles of Newark and we support them all.

“We try to get to know all our customers by name and make everyone feel at home.”

Pubs earn their place in the guide on the recommendations of CAMRA members.

CAMRA East Midlands Regional Director Mr Julian Tubbs said: “The guide has always been about celebrating the best community pubs serving a high standard of real ale, and the competition to be included has never been greater.”
