Angell’s Fisheries, on Barnbygate, Newark into final 20 of National Fish & Chip Awards

A Newark fish and chip shop is a step closer to being named among the top takeaways in the country for a second year in a row.

The narrowed-down shortlist for the UK’s best fish and chip shops has been announced for Takeaway of the Year in the National Fish & Chip Awards, organised by the National Federation of Fish Friers.

The 40 finalists were announced last month, with these now narrowed down to 20. After also reaching the top 20 in 2023, Angell Fisheries, on Barnbygate, is the only finalist in Nottinghamshire.

Co-owner Sophie Angell said the team were “so proud” to be shortlisted for the second year running, and has thanked their loyal customers for making everything possible:

'We're overjoyed to find out we've made it into the top 20! I'd like to give a special shout out to our fantastic team and supportive loyal customers who have made this possible,” she said.

“When we initially took over the shop in 2021, we had a vision of where we wanted to take the shop and I’m thrilled to see it heading in the right direction.

“This wouldn't be possible without the dedication and co operation by our brilliant staff members who go above and beyond.

“We've had our low times along the way like everything in life and I'd like to say thank you to our lovely customers who have been rooting for us and cheering us on from our beginning.”

The finalists were selected after a panel of fish and chip experts rated the businesses on their industry awareness, product knowledge, environmental and sustainability best practice, employer responsibilities, customer service, and more.

The 20 shortlisted businesses will be reduced to 10 shortly, and then the final 10 chippies will be invited to The National Fish and Chip Awards on February 26, at the Park Plaza Hotel, London.
