Newark Book Festival organiser Sara Bullimore said: “Joanne Harris is not only an incredible author, but she’s also the perfect embodiment of this year’s festival theme, which is Home And Away.

“Her stories are inspired by folklore tales from across the world and yet thematically, they strike a chord close to home to many.

“Chocolat in particular explores the power of food and the turbulence of family life, but at the heart of her work lies a little bit of magic. I’m thrilled that Joanne will be joining us at Newark Book Festival to discuss her latest work.”

The 2000 film adaptation of Chocolat, starring Judi Dench and Johnny Depp, was nominated for eight BAFTAs and five Oscars.

The critically acclaimed author from Barnsley has been published in more than 50 countries and has won several UK and international awards.

Joanne was made an MBE in 2013 and is a patron of Doctors Without Borders.

This year’s book festival takes place from July 12 to 14 in 12 venues across the town.

Sara said: “Last year’s festival was the biggest and best yet, with a record number of visitors from across the East Midlands and beyond.

“This year, we have an extended children’s programme and even more fascinating speakers and workshops than ever before. We’ll have some fantastic activities for the whole family to enjoy.”

Tickets for the event will go on sale on Newark Palace Theatre in May for Friends of the Festival.

Festival Friends receive priority booking, discounts, and an invite to a VIP launch event when the festival opens, among other benefits.
