St Mary Magdalene Church's HopeFest aims to spread positivity across Newark

A church is aiming to spread positivity over the next few weeks.

On Saturday, Newark Parish Church will launch HopeFest, which aims to infuse the town with all things hope.

The day will explore the idea of hope through storytelling, creativity and tours of the church in an effort to bring positivity to all.

Rita McCall, co-ordinator of tours at St Mary’s Church said: “The tour of the treasury and tower is open from 1-3pm on Saturday and we have people in those answering questions.

“A free concert will be held from 11.30am to 12.15pm and the café will be open serving drinks.”

The idea of the project is to spread hope and give people the tools to keep them from despairing in tough times.

The Rev David Pickersgill, priest-in-charge of Newark Parish Church, said HopeFest was powerful in bringing people together.

“I have asked for the strength to get through difficult situations.

“It is very inspiring for me. We want people to feel like they can reach out, religious or not.

“We are launching the event this weekend in conjunction with Open Heritage Weekend and will be running it through to Christmas.”

Project Hope has a website where people can write their hopes, some of which will be shared out at the free Stories Of Hope event from 7.30pm on Saturday.

Mr Pickersgill said: “There will be events in the Market Place and Buttermarket where there will be music, a magician, craft activities and a treasure hunt for children to get involved with.

“These stories of hope reflect that some people are going through really difficult times — so in sharing experiences you can gain hope for yourself and others.”
